It's engagement season again. Love is the air and everyone is waiting for the snow to go away and start getting engagement images done outside. And guess what?!? I've also been doing wedding planning myself and keeping brides around the world updated on Happy Planning. If you haven't visited Happy Planning yet, please do!

It's also time to start getting in on high school senior portrait specials for the Class of 2013. Students are signing up for this year's Senior Model Rep Program. Want to know more about it? Click here!

I've been up to some creative projects lately. Instead of talking and talking about it.. I thought I would just share some of the images.

The images above were for the February 2012 Papercut Magazine submission. This project wouldn't have come out the way it did if it wasn't for models Britany Henderson and Jaclyn Rose, Hair and Makeup Artist Heather Baker and clothing and styling by Chelsea Sackchewsky of Rouge Boutique. This shoot lasted about 8 hours and we all were completely exhausted after 16 outfits... but it was completely worth it!

This was such a fun shoot and was completely different than what I normally do since it was really all about the makeup. Normally I focus on the face but it was so much fun to be able to create an image to show off the makeup. Thanks to Jaclyn Rose for modeling and Samantha Koch for Hair and Makeup.

Everyday I get phone calls, emails, texts and Facebook messages saying, "If only I looked like one of your models" or "I'll book my session with you as soon as I lose 20 pounds." Our society has literally made ourselves feel "not good enough" and that we have to make changes to ourselves before we can look beautiful and feel sexy about ourselves.

I've said this how many times and I'll keep saying it, "Everyone is beautiful."

When I was younger, I would look at magazines and say to myself, "If only I had the money to buy that expensive makeup, wear those expensive clothes and know the stylists to the A-Listers... then I could look like that girl."

That's right... I wasn't always confident and I DEFINITELY didn't think I was sexy. I felt like a weird, awkward girl with braces and a big forehead. I always felt out-of-place and that if I wanted to be happy, I had to conform, dress like the other girls and have highlighted blonde hair. I wasn't happy until I stopped caring about what other people were saying started to focus on myself and embrace how I looked and felt.

You're ten times more beautiful when you can truly say, "I Love Myself and I wouldn't change a thing about me." That confidence literally makes your eyes sparkle and will brighten everyone's day. As soon as you start to doubt yourself, others will too.

Be proud of your gap teeth, olive-brown skin, your curly hair and chubby cheeks. Love that you're gay, straight, Christian, Muslim, a Scientist, an Artist, a Singer, Musician, Construction Worker or a mother or father. Be confident in your views, faith, relationships and know that these things are what makes you, YOU.

If you love yourself, you can love others.

Being Compassionate will help you succeed.

Being Confident and Loving who you are... that's Beauty.

This is dedicated to all my fans that have been bullied, feel bad about themselves, wish of those "if only-s" and have lost hope. Things do get better... and it starts with you loving yourself.

"Beast" -A collection of Personal Work

The above image is a self-portrait that I did about 4-5 years ago... it doesn't feel like it's been that long. Honestly, if feels just like yesterday... living in my college apartment with Brent, Killer was just a baby and I was just healing from my surgery for endometriosis. I was dealing with an unbelievable amount of pain, went to several doctors looking for help and even had one tell me that they weren't sure what was wrong but with my family history of miscarriages... I would have a 20% change of getting pregnant. I did "Beast" as a therapeutic assignment for one of my many photography classes to express how I was feeling.

The "Beast" represents our struggles... as if we're taking off all the makeup, the hair and clothing and showing what we really look like, what we're dealing with and that it's ok to express ourselves and share it. We're so quick to judge someone just by appearances when really, we have no idea if that person has cancer, just lost a loved one, dealing with bullying or debt or was raped the night before. We really have no idea...

I now have a new struggle that I've been very scared to talk about... I've been diagnosed with Thygeson's Keratitis. It affects my vision and as a photographer, that's one of the scariest things to have to deal with. I'm thankful that drops help and relieve the symptoms right away so that it doesn't interfere with my work. This new Beast has been extremely difficult to talk about and deal with so I decided I would re-create my original image by photographing new models.

I'm still working on photographing more models for this project and I hope that this helps stop people judging others and to be more compassionate and understanding of each other. I hope this brings awareness to Thygeson's as it's extremely rare... with a cause unknown and little doctors ever being able to see this disease during their practice.

I also hope that this helps others tell their friends, loved ones and anyone else about their "Beast" and that it's ok to feel vulnerable, scared and to ask for help.

I'll keep posting future images to this blog post as I work with future models. Please feel free to tell me your "Beast" or ask me questions about mine.

All hair and makeup was done by myself since this project is so special and personal to me.

Erin's "Hello Angels" Boudoir Session

Fist, I want to clear up the pronunciation of "Boudoir"... replace the "r" with a "w". It's French for "sexy"... actually I have no idea but it's still sounds sexy.

Now... let's get to the nitty-gritty. Boudoir has a stigma to it... and it's from the 80's glamor shots where women are dressed in strange nighties or have overly sensual, fake poses that screams, "I'm trying way to hard."

Boudoir is now about the celebration of being a woman... it's fun, sexy, carefree and celebrates who they are as individuals and screams, "I'm proud of who I am and I love the shape of my body."

Boudoir is for any woman... curvy and skinny-minnie... blonde or brunette.... 6'4" or 4'6".... it doesn't matter. All that matter is that you love who you are.

The "Hello Angels" and the Be-you-tiful Boudoir is to help woman realize their beauty and that they do have gorgeous curves or amazing eyes. I love it when woman are shocked by how beautiful their images turn out. It's almost as if a light-bulb turns on and their confidence is boosted ten-fold.

Tracy and Kyle's Wedding, October 15, 2011

Tracy and Kyle were married on October 15, 2011. The day was absolutely gorgeous 65-degree weather, slight breeze and sunny skies. The only thing better than the weather was the bride and groom and their way-to-fun wedding party.

We started the day photographing the girls getting ready in the Honeymoon suite. There was a lot of mimosas, hairspray and makeup… not to mention all the sexiness. Tracy gave all the gals Victoria’s Secret pink robes (which she told me about the night before) and I knew that my idea would be perfect to show off their bridesmaid gifts.

Tracy looked absolutely gorgeous… the dress was to die for and the flower in her hair so just the right touch. You were just beautiful Tracy! I caught this moment when Tracy was about to walk to Kyle to see each other for the first time. I could tell the nerves and excitement was starting, even though you had your “cool” face on. I think my favorite part of the entire wedding day is when the bride and groom see each other for the first time. I usually cry or laugh- or both- and the reaction each couple has is so unique.

So did I mention how much fun the wedding party was? We hit a few spots after the ceremony including railroad track our east, the beach and downtown. I’m not going to say a whole lot since the images speak for themselves. Thanks for being such a great group to work with!

Tracy and Kyle… I wish you many, many years of love, joy, laughter and happiness …and children! You both are so perfect for each other and I can’t wait to watch you guys grow. Lots of love from Denver to Yankton.

Talk about a sweetheart! Kaylee is running for Miss Colorado Highschool and I hope she wins because she completely deserves it! Although she's soft-spoken, she's very smart and has a great sense of humor.

While we were photographing, she said, "I feel like an egg being hatched. Being under all these lamps." I've never heard that before but I totally get it... there's alot of light that your under. Made me laugh hearing that.

Talk about gorgeous! Spanish and Norwegian heritage, beautiful long hair and amazing almond eyes! I’m totally jealous. Lacey Dahlstrom did Kaylee’s makeup and did a wonderful job bringing out her natural beauty –huge thanks to Lacey (as always) for doing an awesome job!

365 Daily Images

I have a feeling that people would expect this to be easy, as I’m a photographer and taking pictures is what I do for a living. But on the contrary, photographer’s have so much to do than just taking pictures in a studio… we also have bookkeeping, developing, editing, marketing, designing and ordering prints, packaging and shipping those prints and products and we spend a lot of our time traveling.

For the next 365 days, I’ll be taking at least one image a day and posting it to my Facebook Profile album, “365 Daily Images” –and I’m sure this album will eventually turn into several albums. I plan on having these images document my life… whether they’re images of clients, my home and the things in it, my surroundings, self portraits, Brent (sorry but I’m sure you’ll make it in there) and the things I get to see throughout the year) –kind of a digital image journal). I’m sure I’ll learn a few things about myself in this process and I’m sure you’ll find out things about me you didn’t know just by going through these images. I’ll also probably have a problem choosing one image, but I promise I’ll do my best.

First! Congratulations to Cassie and Ashton, married July 30, 2011.

Cassie and Ashton, I’m not going to lie… while I was going through your images of when you first saw each other the day of, I cried! …I didn’t sob but I was definitely getting choked up…. Thank goodness I was chewing a lot of gum while I was photographing this moment!

You guys both looked gorgeous and you don’t have to look twice to see how in love you guys are with each other. I’m so honored to be a part of your wedding day!

I love these images… such a fitting location for you two lovebirds. All of the sweat (literally… 95 degrees and what felt like 90% humidity) was worth it while I was editing these images.

From watching Ashton get dressed twice because he put on the wrong tux the first time, to watching you say your “I Do’s”, to Ashton’s undercover “Mission Impossible” moves to get the garder off… Thank you for letting me be apart of your day!

Ashton & Cassie… has a pretty good ring to it. J

Talk about a fun wedding party… I think I saw everything from the groomsmen being patted down by the ladies to firecrackers being blown up behind the carriage… it was interesting to say the least. To Ashton’s best man, Shelby, thank you so much for including me in your toast. It was a first for me, but it made me laugh, so in my book, you’re freakin’ awesome.

Hearing about all the stories you guys have experienced together and being able to capture your friendships was so much fun… and I still laugh about some of the nicknames you guys have. So… thanks for the crazy day, it was a blast!

Probably one of the best wedding reception ideas I’ve ever seen. A contest between the Bride’s side of the room and the Groom’s side of the room was put into place to see which side could sing “Sweet Caroline” loudest. Almost every guest was standing, singing along and stomping their feet to “Bah, bah, bah, …so Good… so GOOD!” It was so much fun and one of those moments you never forget.

I wish tons of love, many years of happiness and lots of laughs.

Talk about personality! Hailey was a blast to work with ...and she completely wore me out trying to keep up with her. I think she could have played for another five hours without getting tired.

Ashley and Devin Reint's Wedding

The day before Devin and Ashley's wedding, it was pouring rain, foggy, and everything was soaked. I was completely freaking out about the weather since the ceremony was out in the country in a small country side church. Thankfully, it was a great day to be outside in the country.

I don't think I've ever laughed this much photographing a wedding party. Sometimes, it's hard to get wedding parties to relax and just let loose and celebrate the day -I mean, after all, we've been taught to smile nice for the camera all of our lives so it's hard to ask people to just let loose. I loved being able to work this group because they were so much fun, poked fun of each other and made each other laugh til they cried.

The best part about Ashley and Devin's wedding photography is that they were married in the same church that Ashley's parent's were married in. The image below is a "look alike" photograph that her mom did in the same room, same mirror and same pose. I love being able to keep tradition going like this.

Ashley looked gorgeous on her wedding day. While she was getting ready, her mom came in to help her put on her veil and tears were starting to flow... and I found myself holding back tears and wiping them away when no one was looking.

There was a moment during the ceremony that was probably one of the most adorable, fun and precious moments I've seen during a ceremony. As Ashley and Devin was just about to exchange rings, Ashley looked back at her mom and gave her a wink... and her mom mouthed back to her, "I love you" and she was crying like any mother would be. I love being able to witness moments like this.

Ashley had her hair changed to an up-do for the reception. Between fixing the hair, getting everyone organized for entrances and fixing her dress, I managed to get this image of her. I love this image because in the midst of the chaos, she's happy, full of smiles and looks like she's about to run down the stairs on Christmas morning to open presents.

Ashley and Devin, thank you for letting me be apart of your day! I'll never forget the wink to your mom during the ceremony!

SLP Deserving Photoshoot -Kayla and Amalie

Kayla and Amalie are best friends... can you tell? These two girls were nominated and won the Deserving Session Contest. --Kayla nominated Amalie, Amalie nominated Kayla and Brynn Z. nominated both of them because they're best friends and have been there for each other in tough times.

You can't tell by looking at them, but these two girls act like sisters. They would give me the same little smile, speak at the same time, do the same goofy faces to make each other laugh and literally, had inside jokes that made each other laugh like crazy and left me clueless. ...Don't worry... I still laughed at their goofy faces.

Bree's Senior Portraits

While we were walking around outside, Bree got a whistle from people driving by. It was a funny moment for us but for her mom, it was one of those, "I can't believe my baby girl is growing up" moments. I love being able to be a part of this big new step in soon-to-be seniors. Hearing the excitement in their voice, all the things they're excited about for the last year and what they want to do after, reminds me of my high school days and all the excitement I had when I was their age.

Bree... I'm so jealous of your blue eyes and your adorable outfits. Have a wonderful senior year... I know you'll rock it like nobody's business!

Tracy and Kyle's Engagement Session

I’ve known Tracy for a couple of years and Kyle and I grew up in the same town and went to the same high school. SO, I guess you could say that this wedding will be a bit closer to me since I’ve known them and I’ll probably have a pocket full of Kleenexes if anyone starts crying. I’m so excited to photograph your weddings!

I love their engagement images for a few reasons: 1) They’re a gorgeous couple –that’s an obvious; 2) Kyle is extremely funny/quirky. 3) You don’t have to be around them long to tell they’re meant to be together.

As I said… Kyle is really funny and quirky. I caught this moment of Kyle biting Tracy’s nose. I can still remember Tracy’s laugh after he bit the tip of her nose… and after this there were more funny moments like them pushing each other as we walked to a new spot, laughing at Kyle’s backwards “K” for the long night exposure and Kyle asking me why I wasn’t fixing his hair and only Tracy’s.

The long night exposures were an experiment. I wanted to do something very unique for their images since they’re so unique. I think we spent about an hour re-doing each exposure and Kyle, every now and then, would make crazy designs instead of a heart as if he were drawing on the men’s bathroom wall at a nightclub. But we finally got the hang of it!

Tracy and Kyle… you are a beautiful couple and I can’t wait for your wedding day!

Cassie and Ashton's Engagement Session

Talk about a gorgeous couple! I don’t think anyone could make you two look bad if they tried!

Cassie and Ashton are so in love… you can tell in the images but you can also tell just by the way they look at each other. I loved that they were able to just ignore I was there at times and really just make their session about them.

Cassie: I don’t think I’ll ever forget your questions, “Is it weird photographing couples?” I think I first laughed and said no and asked her why (I still laugh thinking about it). I already knew why she asked and the reason for it… it was obvious because they were kissing and holding each other and if they were just in a normal situation in public… I’m sure people would stare because of all the P.D.A. I’ll let you all know what my answer was, “No… not really. I more find it funny because the guys always feel awkward at first having to kiss in front of a camera.” I wouldn’t say every guy is this way but I would say it’s much harder for guys to let their emotions out and give their future wife a kiss or nibble if they fee like doing it. Obviously… you guys are very much in love and very passionate!

Horses! I’ve been to 4-H shows and fairs and have seen horses but they’ve always been behind a gate or getting groomed. I’ve never actually been close enough to a horse to the point of them trying to taste my camera and smelling my hair. With that said… I’ve never been able to create images quite like these. I feel as if they speak for themselves and tell the story about Cassie and Ashton.

The day was extremely windy, hot, humid and about two hours after we finished up… tornadoes rolled through. I always feel that you need to work with Mother Nature… not against it. So I told Cassie the morning of to bring a few scarves so we could work with the wind and to keep her hair down and wavy. I got whipped in the face a few times with the scarves (and Cassie, I’m sure you has an unbelievable amount of knots in your hair) but I love, and I mean LOVE, these images. I can’t wait to photograph your wedding day! It’s only a few more weeks away!

I don't always write something with my posts... but this couple deserves it! I received a call from Stephanie Monday morning asking about wedding photography. –This is very normal for me BUT… wait for it… she needed me in 2 hours!

I’ve never photographed a marriage after booking it two hours later. I found the building and walked in and it was literally nothing but smiles on their faces. Love was literally radiating from their faces… it was such a spontaneous and joyful event. Thank you for letting me be apart of it! –And be your witness! I wish you nothing but joy and happiness for years to come –and that your spontaneity never fades away.

What Should I Wear?

One of the most common questions for a photographer is, “What should I wear for clothes?”

Your clothing choice can greatly impact the way the camera perceives you.

Here are a few common facts about clothing choices, colors, and prints.

When choosing what to wear to your session you want to consider a few things first and plan accordingly:

- your skin tone

- your hair color

- your eye color

- your individual style

- the backdrop to be used, indoor or outdoors

Depending on your skin type the color shirt you wear can bring out skin tones you may not want. You also want to keep your bottoms neutral, such as khaki pants, jeans, etc…

Skin Tone:

Redder skin tones paired with greens will bring out even more of the red in your skin. Lighter, muted colors such as yellow or salmon don’t work as well if you have lighter skin because it washes your skin out. Darker shades are generally the safest choice.

Eye Color:

You can wear colors to bring out your eye color, just make sure it compliments your skin tone as well. (ie: Green eyes wearing a green shirt.)

Hair Color:

Hair color is a determinant too, if you have lighter colored hair avoid lighter colors that will partner with your hair and wash you out, if you have darker hair the darker colors may blend too much. Red heads should avoid oranges and pinks, reds have the potential to work depending on your skin tone.

Individual style:

Your portraits are meant to bring out the best in you and we want your personality to shine through but be careful not to over do it. You are the subject of the picture, not your clothes.

Solids are best to wear but if you prefer to wear a pattern make sure it is simple and subtle to avoid overpowering your face.

Accessories are encouraged, but again, don’t choose something that will take attention away from your face.

Backdrop:

For outdoor sessions, earth tones work best. Weather and seasons can also determine what colors look best outside. For the warmer seasons try to wear lighter “summery” colors, (try to avoid yellows.) For colder seasons, try to wear warmer colors such as reds, browns, and golds.

For indoor sessions the photographer can tell you what color the background will be, if not they will provide a neutral backdrop that should work well with many colors. Try to avoid matching the background and at the same time avoid creating a stark contrast (ie: white shirt against a black background) unless your photographer specifies otherwise.

Remember, darker colors are more slimming.

The most important thing is that you feel you look your best while still being comfortable with yourself and what you’re wearing. This allows us to capture the best of you.

What is your background, qualifications?

I am currently a senior at UNC here in Greeley, CO studying Business Management with a minor in Art/Photography. I have been doing photography since my early years in high school and fell in love with it. I have experience with senior portraits and am just now getting into shooting weddings.

What do you like to do with your spare time?

I like to play with my dog, take pictures with my friends, experiment with new equipment, and when I need to relax a good book is just what I need.

What’s your favorite color and why?

My favorite color is lime green because it’s vibrant, unique and still subtle when paired with neutral colors. It is very adaptable.

What is your personality?

I tend to be a perfectionist but think I am also pretty adaptable to whatever situation comes my way. I love to learn and grow as a person. I like meeting new people and hearing their stories. I love animals, and have always had pets growing up. I am the oldest of two children and my little brother just started his first year of college. I like to keep myself busy whether it be with homework, work, photography, exploring or even cleaning.

If you could go anywhere or do anything what would it be?

Given the time and money I would spend a few years traveling Europe. I have visited Germany but haven’t seen Spain, Italy, France, Ireland, London or any of the other historically rich places. I love art history almost as much as photography so I would spend my time in museums and cathedrals taking in as much art as possible.

Any embarrassing moments?

When I was really young I walked straight into a sliding glass door, expecting it to be open and it wasn’t. Someone cleaned the window really well that day.
